Stephen Schrapel
Stephen Schrapel is a registered architect who is an integral part of the office’s heritage team; specialising in the assessment, conservation and management of heritage places.
Before joining Swanbury Penglase in 2015, Stephen was the Senior Conservation Architect in the South Australian Heritage Unit where he provided conservation advice in relation to South Australia’s 2,200 State Heritage Places and its 17 State Heritage Areas. Through this work he was afforded a privileged insight into South Australia’s history and gained a comprehensive understanding of the state’s heritage and planning legislation. At Swanbury Penglase, Stephen greatly values the opportunity to work with owners to understand their needs and how their heritage buildings can better serve them, as well as assisting them to navigate the necessary approvals.
Stephen holds a doctorate in architectural history from the University of Adelaide, underlining the high level research skills and detailed attention he brings to each project. Outside of work, he spends his time with his young family and, coming from a Barossa wine family, dabbles in experimental wine-making.
