Swanbury Penglase and WGA in collaboration have realised the Charles Street redevelopment for the City of Adelaide.
This transformative project redefines the urban landscape by closing Charles Street to vehicular traffic, creating a pedestrian-only thoroughfare that enhances connectivity within the retail precinct and fosters opportunities for outdoor dining and events.
The redevelopment breathes new life into the Rundle Mall laneway, establishing a crucial link between the South Australian Museum, Art Gallery, and the State’s premier retail hub.
Key improvements focus on pedestrian safety, with an accessible, flush laneway prioritizing foot traffic. Upgraded streetscape lighting and enhanced CCTV systems further contribute to a safer, more vibrant public space, while seamless connections to public transport ensure improved accessibility.
Infrastructure upgrades include retractable bollards for controlling service vehicle access, a modern stormwater system, and future-ready underground service networks. The aging bitumen and concrete pavers have been replaced with Australian Granite, harmonizing the laneway’s aesthetic with the Rundle Mall precinct and providing a durable, high-quality finish.
Greening opportunities were limited due to the complexity of below-ground services. The integration of inground trees and garden beds was not feasible; however, a selection of decorative pots and plants reflect the retail character of the area, enhancing the streetscape while maintaining functional space for service vehicles, pedestrians, and outdoor dining.
Construction was completed within a tight four-month program, with the consultant team, led by Swanbury Penglase, working closely with the City of Adelaide as well as the Contractor, Outside Ideas, to deliver the project on time and on budget by the end of February 2025.
