Parking Day 2011

PARK(ing) Day is an annual, worldwide event that invites citizens everywhere to transform metered parking spots into temporary parks for the public good. Started 6 years ago by Rebar Studio in San Francisco, the event has been getting bigger and bigger every year. With strong endorsement and support from Adelaide City Council and growing public support, the Adelaide event is going from strength to strength.

Last year, Adelaide took part for the first time in which Swanbury Penglase and 11 other ‘PARKers’ took part in which we tied as the winner of the Adelaide Review’s People’s Choice Award. This year Daniel Fighera of SPA’s architecture team played an important role in co-organising the event and office was one of 34 ‘PARKers’ to take part.

This year the aim was create our PARK from waste materials that could be recycled afterwards. ‘SPArk’, the title of the PARK, constituted three stool seats, a tree with origami birds and flowers and a paper mache full size bicycle positioned on borrowed faux grass.

2011 issue of Sitenotes update

Swanbury Penglase has kick started the year with a very busy couple of months. For a full update contact the office for the first 2011 issue of Sitenotes, here are some highlights…

SPA is working with one of the largest private developers in China on a large scale residential and commercial development in Changsha, Hunan Province. Integration of the old and new drives the design philosophy, referencing the history of the site with the adaption and reuse of existing buildings and materials. SPA is responsible for the design of six thirty three story residential towers, low rise townhouses and apartments. The development will also include activity facilities and a kindergarten to suit community living for all generations.

A dynamic built form expresses the imagination of students and the innovation of science and maths, and provides a place of refuge and community for students at Flinders University. The new Science Innovation Learning Centre is designed to help overcome a lack of interest in maths and science courses. The ‘sine wave’ inspired roof design along with this great result saw Mossops win a Master Builder’s Award in the category of Excellence in Commercial Building ($2-5 million) for the project.

We hope you have had a great start to the year, stay tuned for more updates!

Flood Relief Fundraiser

The start of 2011 has been tough for the people of Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, not to mention Christchurch and more recently Japan. In February SPA hosted a BBQ to catch up with colleagues from other firms and to raise money for flood relief. Attendees included staff from Lucid, Parsons Brinkerhoff and Wallbridge & Gilbert. Over $1000 was raised on the night from donations and a silent wine auction, with wines generously donated from our office! We also understand that Wallbridge & Gilbert made a separate contribution on behalf of their staff. A big thanks to the generous spirits of all who helped out and those who attended.
